With high school football practice beginning, August is the time for two-a-days.

And, as it turns out, one-a-days.

SportsInk.com will debut an exciting and informative multimedia feature that will provide local high school football fans with all they need to know – and then some -- about their favorite teams and what their prospects are for the 2010 season.

Beginning this Sunday, Aug.

It was time.

It was time for Jeff Sharkey to come back home.

And it was time for Barberton to give him the opportunity to do so.

It was just time – the right time – for everybody involved.

Sharkey was maybe the happiest guy – and the one around whom there was the most curiosity – at the second annual Suburban League Football Kickoff Luncheon on Thursday at Green High School.

Ready to begin his first season as head coach at Barberton, he was happy to be back in the Magic City, where he was born and raised.

And the other head coaches – even the more high-profile ones such as Green’s Tom Stacy, who guided the state’s most storied program, the Massillon Tigers, and also served as an assistant at the University of Akron, and Greg Dennison, the dean of SL coaches as he enters his 16th season at Wadsworth – wanted to get a good look at this guy.

Former Green star Kelsie Ahbe finished seventh in the pole vault at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick in Canada last Saturday.

Ahbe successfully cleared 3.95 meters, which tied her with fellow American Shade Weygandt. The pair were the only Americans competing in the pole vault and finished three-tenths of a meter behind Sweden’s Angelica Bengsston’s winning attempt of 4.25 meters.

During her high school career, the 2009 Green graduate won the state championship in pole vault twice. Now at Indiana, she recently finished second at the Big Ten championships during her freshman campaign.

Ahbe also placed second at the USA junior championships in June..

AKRON -- Imagine being engulfed by a spontaneous soccer celebration in Spain's capital city.
That's just one of the many memorable experiences Firestone Spanish teacher and current boys soccer coach Michael Householder and his students have shared.
For 15 years, he has been taking 15 graduated students to his native Spain during the summer.
Raised in Madrid, Householder relishes sharing the culture with students who were members of his Spanish IV class.

“I try to keep the cost low,” Householder said.

AKRON -- One of the Akron area’s great traditions, the All-American Soap Box Derby, has received a huge boost from an unexpected source.
Corbin Bernsen, formerly of the hit TV series "LA Law" and the three "Major League" movies, is leading the charge to create the movie “25 Hill,” which centers on the Soap Box Derby and a young boy’s dream to race his car in Akron.

The movie is to be released in 2011 and also depicts the real-life financial challenges the Derby has faced in seeking to continue its 77-year tradition.

Bernsen, who doubles as director and actor in the film, recently returned to Akron on July 23 with his crew to film this year’s event at Derby Downs.

SportsInk.com’s and "The WAKR Morning Show" host Ray Horner was selected to serve as the track announcer for several scenes in the movie that were filmed while this year’s Derby was underway.

Horner also had to return on Sunday and has another day scheduled with the crew to film a different angle.

“I told my wife I’d be home in an hour, 'I just have to read a few lines,' ” Horner said.

Not so.

He will have more than 12 hours in the project when his role is complete, and he’s enjoyed every minute.

Horner was surprised to go through “makeup” and called upon his memorization skills for sports play-by-play to deliver his lines for "25 Hill."

“It was really educational the way they do the whole thing,” he said.

“They do four takes on each.: 12 lines, 12 times four, that’s 48 different shoots, different angles.”

Horner realizes the variety will give Bernsen options when he puts the film together.

"25 Hill" continues filming in Akron this week with many local residents involved as “extras.”

Bernsen has adopted the All-American Soap Box Derby, and his interest and support may well save the Derby for future generations of boys and girls.

Approximately 6,000 children from ages 8 to 17 around the world compete in 150 league-sponsored races each year.

AKRON – Clouds threatened, winds blew, but ultimately the Derby Downs race track stayed dry, allowing two local racers to place at the All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships.

Bringing Northeast Ohio its share of success were Munroe Falls’ Holly Underwood, 16, and Megan Gongaware, 12, from Massillon. Underwood finished fourth in the local Masters division and Gongaware won the local Stock division.

COLUMBUS – After a lengthy decision process, high school football fans in both Stark County and Columbus can breathe easier. Both sites have been given the opportunity to host the OHSAA Football championships for all six divisions. The OHSAA Board of Directors voted today on a four-year plan that will split the playoff location from 2012-2015.

Stark County, which has hosted the football finals in some capacity for 20 years, will continue to host the playoffs for two years after the current agreement runs out in 2011. Stark County will continue to utilize Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium and Canton’s Fawcett Stadium as the home of the OHSAA championships through 2013.

Following Stark County’s two-year extension, Columbus and Ohio State University’s Ohio Stadium will host all six championship games through 2015.

“When we narrowed it down to the final two groups, the subcommittee felt there was no question that both would do an outstanding job in hosting the championships,” OHSAA Commissioner Daniel B.
