ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

TWINSBURG – Our 2010 SportsInk.com Male Athlete of the Year listened to his mom and won a state championship.

Twinsburg senior Waquiem Comar had made up his mind: He wasn’t going to wrestle, despite placing third in the state at 140 pounds as a junior.
 
“Mom was crying a lot because she wanted to see him wrestle,” Twinsburg wrestling coach Dave Mariola said.
 
After a 10-2 football season, in which he scored five touchdowns as a wide receiver-kick returner and helped the Tigers advance to the second round of the state playoffs, Comar, a three-sport athlete, wanted some down time.
 
“He started a month late,” Mariola said. “He had an opportunity to come out before Thanksgiving and still didn’t. He sat home for two weeks. We ran practices and I didn’t beg him to come out. Finally, he came to me one day and and he said, ‘I’ve thought about it and I’ve changed my mind. I want to wrestle.’”
